Flashbacks can be tricky. Here are a few suggestions.
- Don’t introduce them too early. In many ways, establishing character and setting takes longer in a book than in a movie. So I generally feel that it’s better to hold off on any flashbacks for a few chapters.
- If you’re going to use a lot of them, consider time-stamping your chapters. Then, you can do flashback chapters with a different date on them.
- Consider doing the flashbacks as separate chapters or sections to set them off.
- Consider using a lead-in to ‘clue’ the readers into the fact that you’re going into a flashback.
